Electric mountain bike frame size and geometry guide

In this guide we’re going to examine a couple of related concepts: frame size and geometry. The purpose is to help you make the best possible decision of which Amflow electric mountain bike to buy, while also explaining a little bit about how we created the incredible riding experience of our bikes.

Intro to e-MTB geometry

What does ‘geometry’ mean when we speak about e-bikes? Sure, it’s a subject you may have studied at school, related to angles and shapes, but how does that link to all-mountain adventures and dreamy flow trail laps?

Well… mountain bike geometry can have a big impact on your enjoyment in the saddle, because it is a significant factor in the overall comfort of your ride. We’re talking here about the angles and lengths of the frame (and a couple of other parts of your bike). If one tube in the frame is too long or too short, it can create an angle in an entirely different part of the frame that puts pressure on your back, knee or hip. In extreme cases, riding a bike with the wrong geometry can even cause injuries.

8 Key Mountain Bike Geometry Concepts

Here are some of the different measurements and angles that frame designers consider when creating a trail-ripping e-MTB.

Top tube length

  • The horizontal distance between the head tube (where the front fork is connected) and the seat tube.
  • A longer top tube generally stretches the rider out more, which can be better for stability at speed, while a shorter top tube allows for a more upright and comfortable position.
  • Reach

  • The horizontal distance from the bottom bracket (where the cranks attach) to the top of the head tube.
  • Reach is a critical measurement in determining how stretched out or compact the rider feels on the bike. A longer reach often translates to a more aggressive ride, while a shorter reach provides a more upright and comfortable position.
  • Stack

  • The vertical distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube.
  • A higher stack means a more upright riding position, which is typical in commuter or touring e-bikes for comfort. A lower stack leads to a more aggressive, aerodynamic position. E-MTB geometries fall somewhere in the middle. Certainly not as high a stack as a commuter bike, but shorter than something really aero like a road bike.
  • Stack height changes with frame size.
  • Head tube angle

  • The angle of the head tube relative to the ground. It influences the bike's steering characteristics.
  • A slacker (lower) head tube angle (e.g., 64-66 degrees) is common in e-MTBs, providing more stability, especially at high speeds or on rough terrain. Our PL Carbon Pro employs a 64.5° head tube angle, putting it at the slacker end of the scale.
  • A steeper (higher) head tube angle (e.g., 67-70 degrees) results in quicker, more responsive steering, which is often found in commuter or road-oriented e-bikes.
  • Seat tube angle

  • The angle of the seat tube relative to the ground. It affects pedaling efficiency and rider position.
  • A steeper seat tube angle (e.g., 72-75 degrees) positions the rider more over the pedals, which is good for power transfer and climbing.
  • A slacker seat tube angle provides a more relaxed position, typically seen in e-MTB. The PL Carbon and PL Carbon Pro use a seat tube angle of 70°.
  • Chainstay length

  • The distance from the bottom bracket to the rear axle.
  • Shorter chain stays make the bike more agile and easier to maneuver, which is beneficial for tight, technical riding.
  • Longer chain stays contribute to stability, especially when carrying cargo or descending at high speeds.
  • Wheelbase

  • The distance between the front and rear axles.
  • A longer wheelbase increases stability, making the bike more suitable for high-speed cruising or carrying extra weight.
  • A shorter wheelbase enhances maneuverability, which is preferable for urban riding or off-road trails.
  • Bottom bracket height

  • The vertical distance from the ground to the bottom bracket.
  • A higher bottom bracket provides more ground clearance, which is essential for off-road riding to avoid hitting obstacles.
  • A lower bottom bracket lowers the centre of gravity, which improves stability and handling on smooth surfaces.
  • Measuring an e-mountain bike geometry vs measuring bike frame

    E-MTB frame size is similar to e-mountain bike geometry, although it’s a bit more straightforward. Using your standing height, you should be able to determine what size of e-bike is right for you using our size chart.

    Geometry remains largely unchanged regardless of the size of the individual frame, so that the riding experience of a tall cyclist on an XL frame is very similar to that of a shorter individual using a size medium.

    Geometry is determined by the bike's designer, and focused on creating a particular set of sensations while riding. Size is determined by the cyclist’s height (and to a lesser extent, the proportions of their body). A cyclist with particularly long arms or legs relative to their overall height may feel more comfortable on a different size to the one indicated purely by their standing height, but these cases are rare, and often the solution can be to use a different length of stem or notch the saddle up a little, rather than change the entire frame to a bigger or smaller size.

    How to measure an e-mountain bike frame

    Bike frame sizes have traditionally been given as a measurement of length. So you would ride a 54cm or a 21 inch frame. That measurement is taken from the length of the seat tube, measured from the centre of the bottom bracket (the point where the cranks attach to the bike) to the top of the seat tube (where the seat post is inserted).

    However, to streamline things and make it easier to understand, Amflow uses simple sizes like you’d see on an item of clothing: Medium, Large, X Large and XX Large.
